It's an in joke germane to the Joel on Software family of forum boards, including CoT.

Brice Richard was a juvenile loud mouthed idiot who advocated gross misuse of certain APIs.

and claimed that his clever usage of the windows clipboard was some sort of clever advance in software technology, or something, it was too clever for me and I couldn't quite grok it.

Part of his ridiculousness was the message. The idea that an API that was intended for one type of purpose (human interaction) should be used for a general messaging system between processes.

The other part was his belligerent attitude. Brice was kind of like a backward redneck from the pages of "Hillbilly Elegy" - angry that the smart kids were better esteemed than him, so he pounded the idea that he was too brilliant to even bother to justify what he stated.

He was an ultraviolet level know-it-all, and as far as anyone knew he was taking the piss as an ongoing act. He vanished after CoT was closed.

He extended the attitude to just about anything that was discussed.

I think his career was exclusively building demo and proof of concept applications so he never dealt with technical debt.

His anger and belligerence was over the top most of the time.

Brice is worth mentioning periodically just to keep everyone humble that this is what happens when you're full of shit and you aren't even aware.

Yes, sure. With some vigilance in place. We're not talking Horrorwitz level destructive intellect. The guy can probably barely code or hack. And his talking points quite literally come from the "Toilet Store" of Anchorman fame.

I kind of wonder if he was even a real person. He just displayed an excess of every negative human tendency... he's sort of the poster child why aliens should discard the human race.

He doesn't seem real to me, but I was never part of CoT. Maybe he just created an online persona. I think HPDQ did that too. He was Ugly Bag once, wasn't he? People like that are entertaining, but some stuff they say needs to be met with skepticism.

When I look at this post from Brice it looks like so many stand-up comedian's monologues I've heard before. He made it his own. Its silliness.

Do you ever think about allowing HPDQ back? I think you miss a lot of things about him, though he comes with baggage. He always added a spark but you never knew what would set him off.

He almost always goes dark and only uses existing known gathering places to post or receive replies. He used a Mailinator type address to register in the past. I have absolutely no idea how to contact him privately.

He posted on that other forum and nobody seemed to give a fuck.

I'm sure he checks out this site from time to time. He always had fun here. He knows where to find you. Maybe he hasn't tried because he wasn't sure you would let him back.

I'm not fascinated by his persona or what he has to say. Since the days of CoT I have become a _lot_ more jaded about high profile personalities on discussion boards. He would contribute a lot of shit and hot air and ill will here.

Also interesting that he was _looking_ for MS Access work. His line used to be that work automatically flowed to him by default.

Are there any members from COT that you miss that might fit in well here? PigPen comes to mind. I cannot think of too many others tho.

If you hadn't noticed, however, since I run the forum, I can't make anyone a punching bag.

I know that was part of my charm on JoS but it's out of reach today for me to do that with anyone on the forum.

I told HistorianPDQ to back off on the hate and he starts erasing every post he made going back to August. We had "Grumpy Old Git" a couple years ago who told me to fuck myself and went psycho over an incredibly minor comment I made.

One thing I never got - you could get a reaction out of Brice by dogpiling him. So why didn't he ever engage "President of the Brice Fan Club"? They coexisted for a long time.

I assume Brice took the title as deserved homage/praise.

Then again, the guy did seem a bit dense. Even when you ripped on him, he tried to pretend that it wasn't happening.
