Your intestines can develop polyps, which are knobby tissue growths inside the colon. Some can become cancerous. They often will snip them out during a colonoscopy so they can correct the issue in the same go. Just testing your poop won't do that. Removing polyps reduces the chance of future cancer.
I've had two colonoscopies. Mine will be combined with a GI endoscopy to see what is going on with my stomach issues.
I think colonoscopies are a reasonable precaution.
