Saturday Night Live is Effing PATHETIC (Public Board)

Here is the gag. I guess it was tonight's episode (4-13-24).

The gag was that a professor from MIT is being interviewed about AI, and the interview gets stopped several times because there are two males in the studio audience who look like Beavis and Butthead.

The entire cast, including the girl who is the interviewer, just lose their shit and start cracking up. I watched until the interviewer lost her shit and clicked off. It annoyed me.

I'd expect that from amateurs but allegedly SNL is a professional network production.

It's unprofessional and ruins the joke. The cast not being able to control themselves take you out of the joke (which was fairly good) and ruin the effect. Even "Beavis and Butthead" start laughing along with most of the studio audience characters.

Nobody in this country can do anything right, including put on an entertainment production.

SNL hasn't been good in years. Once in a while they have a good opening skit, but that's it. I'm not sure who the woman interviewer is, but she stinks. There really isn't any good comedy on TV anymore.

This skit is really good and funny - "Relax, Dad, it's just ISIS" -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_L2fazw5Y9k

(This was a take on a Toyota ad - I own that color and model of Camry :-D)

This skit is hilarious because they don't break character or start laughing at their own humor like hyenas.

"Take care of her"... "Death to America" :-D

SNL has had a few other things in the last 10-20 years that have been funny. The difference being they hold their shit together and keep the little humor universe of the joke intact.

I remember that skit. It was really funny. There has been some good ones over the years, but I couldn't watch the whole show now like I used to. They have one great skit, a musical act and the rest of the show is boring. Plus, I don't stay up that late anymore.

Well this is interesting because I didn't think it was that funny. If they had stopped at "it's just ISIS <wink>" or even "look after her/death to america" it could've been good but they didn't stop and they spoiled it. Is this a cultural thing?

You betcha. We Murricans run shit into the ground.

Seriously, our entertainment lacks all nuance. Why use a feather when a sledge hammer will do?

oh well that's interesting too. Yanks are notorious here for being subtle as a brick but I always took that with a grain of salt.

Maybe some people that live under a rock wouldn't know what ISIS is so they had to include the "death to America" crap. There are people in America that are that dense.

BTW, the girl in the video is Dakota Johnson, an actress, and she was a guest host, not a member of the SNL cast.

A joke that would be funny in 2 minutes gets dragged out for 5+ minutes.

That's because they have to fit in commercials. If they have a 2 minute sketch, they would need to have another 3-5 minute sketch as filler before the next commercial. Instead they drag out the 2 minute sketch for 5 minutes, when the joke of the sketch really only deserved 2 minutes.

That's one thing shows like Monty Python's Flying Circus did well. Because there were no commercials on British TV at the time, they could make each sketch last the right amount of time. If something was funny for 1 minute, they could do it for 1 minute then move on. If something was funny for 12 minutes, they could do it for 12 minutes rather than cutting it to fit in 7 minutes.

Making A New Show vs. Leeching Someone Else's Success

by FSK, Sunday, April 14, 2024, 18:27 (15 days ago) @ Cornpop Sutton

The original cast of SNL had the attitude "We're doing something new and we're going to make it great."

The current cast has the attitude "SNL will look good on my resume. I'll stay a few years, then I can get projects I really want." This also means they aren't going to take any real creative risks while on SNL.

You also have the problem that the writers are hired for their woke credentials rather than ability. You can see this with all the late-night comedy now. That's why they're laughing at their own jokes, even though it really isn't funny. They're living in their own bubble.

No matter how much SNL sucks, it won't get cancelled. What else will NBC put on at 11:30 Saturdays? If ratings get bad enough, they would just fire everyone and start over with a new cast.

You also have inertia. People remember SNL used to be good, so they keep watching. They even have one decent joke once in awhile (like the ISIS one), which is enough to keep people coming instead of giving up like they should.

It isn't worth watching a show for 1 hour a week if they have maybe 5 good jokes a year.

I wish there was a "right-wing SNL" or other comedy show. It should be easy to do, but no network has the balls to air it.

100% accurate synopsis of the history of SNL

(Clap clap clap... demure applause) Well done, FSK.

The exact same words and narrative apply to the track of "Star Trek" over the years.

I wish there was a "right-wing SNL" or other comedy show. It should be easy to do, but no network has the balls to air it.

I like "Gutfeld" but it's a talk show format.

I knew SNL before it was on the air!

I followed something called "The National Lampoon Radio Hour", which aired on progressive rock FM stations from fall of 1973 through mid or late 1974. I recommend looking for torrents of the show recordings, or I think it was being broadcast on Sirius XM a few years ago.

The voice actors on the Radio Hour included all of the original SNL cast: Chevy Chase, Belushi, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, plus some second city TV personalities like Harold Ramis.

They took even more chances with edgy comedy than early SNL did.

I was amazed a year later when the same names were touted on SNL on TV. Nobody in my acquaintance but me had any idea who these actors were. SNL's first seasons were basically "National Lampoon's Radio Hour" on TV.

The first several years of SNL, probably extending a bit into the second cast such as Joe Piscopo, et al had the improv comedy flavor.

SNL is stale exactly the same way as the Star Trek franchise has become stale. Like you said, a very old entertainment franchise with high name recognition whose IP owners completely avoid any risk taking, and hire clueless woke writers with no soul who have no idea what the value of the original series was.

Star Trek Should Be Public Domain

by FSK, Monday, April 15, 2024, 11:03 (14 days ago) @ Cornpop Sutton

Star Trek, Star Wars, Superman/Batman/X-Men all should be public domain by now. They would be according to original copyright terms (34 years).

The reason they can "ruin Star Trek" is they have a monopoly for making new Star Trek shows, due to copyright. Some people will watch anyway, even though it sucks, because they really like Star Trek. If Star Trek was public domain, fans could make and sell new Star Trek shows that are actually good.

Anyone can make a Sherlock Holmes story, because he's public domain. Everything from the 20th century is copyrighted and owned by some corporation.

I watched bits of Gutfeld. He wasn't that funny.

This statement sounds like the line from a guy holding a gun from the stupid new "A24 Civil War" movie: "What kind of American?"

So what kind of Star Trek fan?

I clicked on a Youtube clip from "Star Trek Lower Decks" lately. IMO total fucking cringe with sophomoric dialog.

Star Trek merited its monopoly on Star Trek IP up through "Enterprise" which was seriously underrated. Everything after that was trash.

I watched bits of Gutfeld. He wasn't that funny.

I get that. IMO Gutfeld is too clubby and cliquey. You have to buy into liking and knowing about each member of the panel. I used to watch "Red Eye" with Gutfeld late night in the early 2000s and it seemed much funnier and sharper than any liberal or mainstream talk show.

I don't care for Gutfeld either. I see him as more of a talk show guy than a comedian. If I want to watch comedy on TV now I look at old Seinfeld episodes. They are just timeless.

Yes the writers of Seinfeld were very perceptive.

None of the main characters are black? Series not greenlit for production and airing.

What do you mean the black male character is a loser with no job? (Kramer or Costanza)

What do you mean the black female character is a cheap slut?

This racist garbage should not be allowed to air.

Gutfeld was funnier on The Five when he was limited to a few minutes. He was an asset there because he was perceptive.

Tbh I have to agree with you. This could have been much better.
