The biggest horse race on the planet[1] runs tomorrow, first Tuesday in November.

The Melbourne Cup. Two miles, or 3200 metres.

I have a little heuristic which tells me that Vauban is good for a place. Let's see, shall we :)

[1] received wisdom, not my personal opinion :) They also call it the race that stops a nation, on account of the fact that lots of employers run a $2 sweepstakes and set up a tv for their employees to watch the race. Usually Race 7 (at Flemington) at about 3:20 pm. My first job, the boss supplied champagne in little clear plastic cups. Now don't be mean and say it was cheap champagne.

edit: Flemington not Randwick. Dunno what made me say Randwick which is Sydney not Melbourne.

Good story.

Employer financed drinking sort of on the job has a nostalgic sheen for me. I remember after work beer blasts at a certain Silicon Valley employer (which were abolished after an employee wrecked their car and was paralyzed after one of those events.) If you're young you're around kind-of friends and in sort of a safe space, unlike a lot of bars.

(I didn't become an angry drunk until much older...)
