Campbell's Soup Exposed! (Public Board)

I really want to thank the VP for laying the truth out there about their soups. I used to eat Campbell's soup many years ago but it just started tasting bad over the years. Soups are the perfect way for companies to cheat on their ingredients. They all do it.

Campbell Soup’s VP and Chief Information Security Officer, Martin Bally, was secretly recorded saying the company uses bioengineered meat, their products aren’t healthy, and that it’s mostly poor people who buy them.

"We have s--- for f------ poor people. Who buys our s---? I don’t buy Campbell’s products barely anymore. It’s not healthy now that I know what the f---‘s in it. Bioengineered meat! I don’t wanna eat a f------ piece of chicken that came from a 3-D printer."

This has been all over the news for the past week.

I think the guy's venting is absolutely hilarious. It reminds me of a Sam Kinison rant.

I do disagree that its market is poor people. Campbell's is a middle class institution almost. The chunky soups are fairly good, not that filling, and they really have no market competition. Progresso soups have gotten sad (extremely thin). Or you wanna pay $5+ per can for some brand like Amy's. Personally, I make a lot of soup at home from scratch and avoid the quality issue.

The overly processed slop is right on target. When the ingredient list for any off the shelf food is 3X or more the length of the basic foods you know it's chemically enhanced trash that Europeans sneer at.

He is like Sam Kinison. Just a loose cannon. Campbell's fired Bally after his rant. That's predictable, but really Campbell's should listen to what he said about them and clean up their act.

Today's Campbell soup is made for poor people, but they used to be a middle-class staple many years ago. My mother gave me Campbell's soup as a child as part of lunch and that was the 50's. Back then it tasted like real soup. I always thought Chunky Soup was decent, but I haven't had it for a long time. I'm like you where I make my own soups from scratch. Nothing tastes better than homemade soup where you pick out the ingredients.

The soups haven't changed. We have. Campbell's to me (at least the small canned condensed soups) seems pretty much the same as in my 60s childhood.

Campbell's basic soups haven't kept up with consumer preferences. For instance I used to like the beef vegetable soup but today it seems thin and unsatisfying. So I've changed, it's pretty much the same stuff. Maybe more bioengineered.

The Chunky soups are a response to consumer preferences.

If Campbell's is "f*cking poor people's shit", I have no idea what middle class or affluent people eat for soup.

As far as Campbell's being uniquely terrible, I can name other brands that have had a much worse trajectory and have shrinkflated or gone crazy with synthetic garbage. Campbell's IMO has held a line on quality fairly well over the decades.

One example is Marie Calendar's "anything". Their pot pies are OK but almost every other selection is crap. Banquet was always bad but it's even worse now. Another example is Totino's pizza rolls. I just made a stromboli tonight for our dinner, because I wanted that flavor profile in something decent, and the store bought pizza rolls have a flavorless orange filling that tastes barely like pizza.

I'd give Campbell's a solid B+ for resisting enshittification, actually. It looks like stores are dumping their inventories... might find some deals.

I always liked their tomato soup, but today it tastes less like tomatoes and more like chemicals. I've bought the lower-sodium tomato soup for years but now I just don't like how it tastes. If I'm going to eat soup for lunch I usually get a cup fresh from my local supermarket or deli. Soup du jour. If its soup for dinner, I'll make it myself. I want something that tastes fresher nowadays.

The VP thought Campbell's soup is "f*cking poor people's shit" . He was being honest. Most of their canned soup is mediocre, though Chunky Soup is probably still good. I haven't tried other canned soups but I'm sure they're not that good either. I like Rao's soup in the glass jars. They're pretty good, but overall I don't eat a lot of soup because there is too much salt.

I don't buy any frozen meals anymore because of the salt content, especially Marie Calendar's anything. I used to like Stouffer's Mac and Cheese but haven't bought it in years because it tastes terrible now. I make my own Mac and Cheese when I need a side dish. It freezes well too.

What I do with Pizza is buy a pie from my favorite pizzeria and freeze the individual slices. They heat up in the oven nicely and are far superior to any of the frozen pizza brands. Today I buy zero frozen foods in the supermarket aside from plain, frozen vegetables.

Frozen peas, or beans, I will buy because fresh peas is, you know, a lot of work :) Anything else frozen, no.
I won't buy anything packaged in a cardboard box because it isn't actually food.
Meat and vegies and homemade sauces or butters. I don't get bored because the missus does the cooking. But when I cook it's all natural.
