11th November 1975 (Public Board)
Fiftieth anniversary not far away.
Here is a new revelation. A telephone operator eavesdropped on a phone call from the US Ambassador to Australia to the Premier (leader) of Queensland more-or-less instructing the Premier to make the right political appointment rather than the wrong one.

In 1975, the dismissal of the Prime Minister of Australia was seismic. It was made possible by the appointment of a non-Labor Senator to replace a Labor Senator who had died in office. This changed significantly the numbers in the Senate. The Senate voted 30-29 to cease funding the government. This led directly to the dismissal of the prime minister, Gough Whitlam. The US was concerned about losing control of their spy satellite comms base in Pine Gap near Alice Springs, Northern Territory. They didn't trust Whitlam and wanted him gone. They got their wish.
