What do you think of Trump's tariffs on other countries? (Public Board)

I think its a great plan to boost our economy. Maybe the stock market doesn't like it now, but it'll work itself out shortly after they think about it more. Other countries impose their tariffs on goods sold in the US and sometimes they are steep. I guess the US didn't impose tariffs on those countries in the past or if we did they were very low tariffs. Things are different now.

I'm sure countries will negotiate the tariffs Trump wants to impose, but the bottom line is the US stands to benefit one way or the other. Maybe some countries might relocate their businesses here to avoid tariffs. Other countries may lower their tariffs if we lower ours. I think its a good thing for our country in the end.

All for it

The US had to do something about this situation. Nobody buys US products overseas because the tariffs along with our high costs make our goods completely unaffordable so all we do is buy other country's shit. The tariffs imposed by foreign nations are ridiculous. Near 300% Canada imposes for US dairy? Their new prime minister is as much an addle headed faggot as Justin Trudeau.

However, the medicine for trade imbalance may be like giving chemo to someone who is already chronically malnourished. The economy should be stronger in order to tolerate the impact. We have a weak debt ridden economy and the bubbles are bursting.

I see what Trump is trying to do, which is major systemic shock, and our system is already creaking.

The US has allowed itself to be taken advantage of by other countries for too long. Trump put a stop to it. Even though there's pain, the unfairness has to end.

So true:

"Nobody buys US products overseas because the tariffs along with our high costs make our goods completely unaffordable so all we do is buy other country's shit."

I think the US can take it. There is never a good time for a reckoning. We're putting these countries on notice that if they want to do business in the US their goods will be tariffed.

Observations on Trump's Tariffs

Main thing: the response to tariffs from the world community seems exactly like how the EU is dealing with Putin.

No negotiation, total resistance, countermeasures planned, Trump bad, tariffs bad. It's amazing how uniform the hatred for Trump's position on trade is.

The mainstream is constantly fear-mongering the tariffs with many face to face interviews with little people damaged by tariff charges.

No it's not the least bit amazing :(

Trump and Orban (of Hungary) are the only two Western leaders who are not traitorous arseholes. OF COURSE everyone hates Trump. He is looking after the interests of the population. No-one else does that, all Western leaders betray their populations and enrich themselves, and have done for countless decades. Trump is literally upsetting things. All these remarks apply to Orban.

In my lifetime, no leader in this country has represented us, every single one of them has betrayed us.

I don't know the details of individual countries' trade situation with the US. So I can't comment on whether the tariffs applied by Trump in any given case are fair or not.

But I do know that in general a small tariff, say 10% but not a specific figure, can be beneficial to a country's given manufacturing industry. I have read that Trump's tariffs are computed to neutralise the trade deficit with the given country. People can have their opinion on that. I'm not against it.

Trump claims that this new arrangement will be good for Americans once things settle down. Whether or not he is proved correct over time, good on 'im for caring and for having a go. I hope it works for him, and for Americans. I hope he sets an example that all national leaders follow, namely to look after the people that pay your salary.

I don't know the details of individual countries trade situations either, but in general countries were charging us tariffs and we did not charge them anything close to what we were being charged. For example, the EU can sell their cars in the US directly competing with US auto manufacturers. The high tariffs the EU puts on our cars prevents the US from competitively selling them in the EU market. The US auto market has suffered because of all the foreign competition, at home and abroad.

Trump hopes to end this unbalanced trade situation and rekindle the manufacturing sector in the US. Companies around the world can build plants to manufacture their products in the US and avoid tariffs altogether. Some companies are opting to do that already because with the tariffs Trump has imposed on their products, they would no longer be competitive in the US market.

So far, at least 50 countries are negotiating with Trump on the tariffs and working out mutually acceptable solutions. The only country that is problematic is China. We have close to a $400B trade deficit with China. They need the US to keep their economy going. They will make a deal in the end. Nearly everything in the US is made in China and that is just plain stupid. Its been like that for a long time. Our using them for manufacturing has put US manufacturing out of business. They can build it cheaper and sell it cheaper in the US because they use slave labor.

I think Trump's idea will work but there's going to be some pain until it kicks in. I think his idea is excellent and we need to see it through. To Trump, this is the ultimate art of the deal. He's doing it for the citizens in this country and future generations. We're so lucky to have his leadership.

Needs A Tariff on Software Offshoring

by FSK, Monday, April 07, 2025, 01:44 (144 days ago) @ JoFrance

Unless Trump also puts a tariff on offshored software work, it's only partially solving the problem.

It's impossible to open a factory in the USA when wages in the USA are $20+/hr for a factory worker, and they're $1/hr in China (with no labor laws protecting workers). The tariff should be high enough to offset the $19/hr wage difference.

Needs A Tariff on Software Offshoring

The US companies that use offshoring are taxed already on the income they generate from the work, but not to make up for the pay differences between the US and various countries. It probably wouldn't be worth offshoring if they put some kind of tariff on it that would offset the wage differences.

A lot of big companies would be highly upset with Trump if he ever tariffed offshore software work. Big companies love their cheap overseas labor.
