I was attending college in the late 70s when the Iranian revolution was in progress. Iranian students at my campus were plastering "Down with the Shah" posters all over the place. One drunk friend made a specific point of taking down one of those posters and placing it inside a urinal on campus and then using it the urinal.
The point is, Iranians had a comfortable western style culture in that period and overthrew the Shah (because he was a US puppet) and embraced a "dett to tee US" ayatollah who imposed strict Muslim doctrine. They preferred religious strictness over freedom.
Iran will probably spiral out of control if the clerics are eliminated. Those countries in that region can't tolerate or deal with democracy, and the US will get its hands on Iran and make it far worse, as we do every other country we want to "improve".

I don't think it will be like when Saddam was deposed by the US. I think they'll flee to other places that are willing to take them. They won't be safe anywhere ever again after what they've done to Israel, however.
The Iranian people were much better off under the Shah because they had freedom. A US puppet is better than an Islamic fundamentalist, but Iran is a divided country. There is a modern, educated population but also hard-line Islamics. I guess back in 1979, the hard-liners won out.
Life in Iran is probably horrible right now. If the clerics are eliminated there will be a huge power vacuum where anything can happen. The Iranian people could have freedom after years of oppression if they fight for it.

You're totally not getting it. You make regime change sound like a slam dunk and handwaving the actual risks. This is a common error with Americans, nobody here understands basic nature of Iran. We hand wave about those quaint people over there somewhere.
Tucker exposed neocon Ted Cruz's ignorance in a recent interview that got combative on two points:
1) Ted Cruz had no idea what Iran's size is. He said "whatever" when challenged. The point was that Cruz had absolutely no idea if Iran was a small country (<10 million) or a large country. Iran has 90 million people, about 1/4 the population of the US. Cruz pushes for a war with no idea how large the target is.
2) Ted Cruz had no idea about Iran's population mix. There are several factions in Iran, not simply peace loving potential western style consumers. They take their Shia religion deadly seriously, even to stage a revolution over. A strong central government keeps Iran's factions bottled up. Change that regime and you will see the biggest civil war on Earth plus a migrant crisis that overshadows anything we've seen in this century.
IMO Tucker was civil about it and probably too nice. Ted Cruz is a moron.
Tucker had Cruz dead to fucking rights.

I didn't say regime change was a slam dunk. I said if the clerics are eliminated there will be a huge power vacuum. If the Iranian people want freedom they'll have to fight for it. The US shouldn't be involved in that and certainly not in a war with Iran or regime change.
I didn't see the video, but Ted Cruz is out in left field somewhere. Trump never talked about going to war in Iran to effect regime change. All he has said is Iran can never have a nuclear bomb. He has an attack plan to bomb that one nuclear site, Fordow, with a bunker buster bomb but is giving Iran a chance to dismantle it. Its their last chance or else BOOM!
I'll have to watch some of the Tucker video and let you know.

True.
If the Iranian people want freedom they'll have to fight for it.
A LOT of "IFS" for a very unruly fragmented country of 90 million that has never western Democracy.
And "fighting for their freedom" makes the disorder following a regime collapse sound like a linear march toward civic order. Far more likely you have utter chaos. Iraq, a much smaller country, collapsed in inter group conflicts and required occupation. Iran will be several times worse.
The US shouldn't be involved in that and certainly not in a war with Iran or regime change.
And look at the track record of the US in Iraq, once again. It'll be exactly the same deal, just scaled massively. This will NOT be clean or surgical. It's madness.
I've read that a war with Iran could destroy the US. I think that is close to correct.

Whether the Iranian people fight back depends on if the military will back them. The Revolutionary Guard needs to back the people, not the regime. I don't know if they would do that.
I don't think Trump wants to involve us in that war militarily. He's treading very carefully and still trying to negotiate a deal with Iran. Now, there is uncertainty whether the bunker buster bomb will even work. I hope he doesn't do it based on what happened with Iraq. You break it, you bought it. It would be just like what happened in Iraq.
