MSNBC is being "Spun off" by Comcast (Public Board)

Bill O'Reilly offers an interesting take as to why and also thinks ABC might get rid of "The View"

Guess who is looking to buy MSNBC? Elon Musk! Could you imagine what he'll turn that into? From MSNBC to MXNBC. Its safe to say we won't be seeing Morning Joe, Joy Reid or Keith Olbermann anymore.

MSNBC is being "Spun off" by Comcast

I remember when MSNBC was formed. It was in the late 90s, like 1997 or '98. Internet portals like Yahoo were red screaming hot as investment property. Microsoft and NBC created MSNBC as a literal combination of internet portal and TV network - it was kind of supposed to pair an MSNBC branded website with a TV network.

Then I suppose MS divested early at some point when every company on earth had their own website, and it was no longer "Microsoft flavored NBC." But the letters used to stand for MicroSoft-NBC.

Our culture is so brain dead that I bet hardly anyone recalls that period. That was back when viewing CNN or Fox for news were roughly similar. It was so positive then compared to now.

I remember that and Bill Gates was all in on partnering with NBC. I actually used to watch some shows on NBC back then and they were so proud of the new station. Yeah, probably most people don't remember that little bit of history. The news back then was so benign compared to the far-left hatred we hear today.

If Elon Musk buys MSNBC maybe we'll have the first truly conservative mainstream news network.

If Elon Musk buys out MSNBC, all the advertisers will say "Fascism!" and drop MSNBC. All the cable carriers (Comcast, Spectrum, Cablevision, etc.) will drop MSNBC as a channel.

The only thing that MSNBC owns that's worth anything is the contract with cable companies to carry the channel. All of those will be terminated after a Musk purchase.

Right-wing alt-news sites like OAN tried to get cable providers to carry their channel, but weren't able to get anyone to carry their channel, even if they charged $0 licensing fee.

Shortly after purchase, MSNBC will become an Internet-only broadcast channel, losing most of its audience.

Similarly, they're pushing Bluesky HARD right now. Remember 10 years ago when every celebrity said "Follow me on Twitter!" or "Friend me on Facebook!" That was all free advertising for Twitter/Facebook, which is how they got huge and near-monopoly status. Now they're pushing Bluesky. All the normies are going to leave Twitter for Bluesky, which means Twitter loses most of its value.

Twitter is going to be just a right-wing echo chamber like Gab.

A website has two choices:

Censor right-wing viewpoints, so it becomes a leftist/commie/normie "safe space". Then you can get advertisers, investors, and mainstream media promoting your product.

Don't censor anyone. The leftists/commies get offended and leave. You won't be able to get advertisers, investors, or mainstream media promotion.

Any "free speech website" will degenerate into a right-wing echo chamber, because everyone on the left gets offended and leaves. The only way you can make a website where the left feels "safe" is by censoring the right.

Logically, the solution is to re-educate the left. haha

MSNBC has no viewership now. People have turned off the far left nuts on that station because they were lied to about the last election. Since Trump won the election, there will now be different rules for the cable companies where they may not be able to ban MSNBC from their lineup like what they did to OAN.

Musk will rebrand the station and make it attractive to advertisers. Maybe he'll bring the internet to mainstream news with shows like "News from Xonline." It would follow FCC guidelines, but otherwise no censorship. A lot of shows on cable today are just so stupid, its ripe for takeover. Musk could shake things up.

Bluesky should probably be called Misery Loves Company. I think It'll fail just like Threads did. Twitter/X is the gold standard and Musk can capitalize on it.

Remember that loud mouth Chris Matthews?

I remember watch him after 9/11. He was on TV around Election Day. Hard to believe that dude is pushing 80.

That would be funny if he bought it and put Steve Bannon in Rachael Maddow's timeslot.

different rules for the cable companies

Whatever rules there are, they will change when there is a Democrat President again. Musk would have to make sure that new-MSNBC is so popular that cable channels would be embarrassed to drop it, even with a new Democrat President.

If the cable companies are still around in 4 years a Democrat president could change the rules, but Musk will most likely create a new station that is very popular. Out of all the cable news stations now, the most consistently successful is Fox News because they lean conservative but try to appeal to everyone. They're mostly fair and balanced.
