Prepping for Election Day Chaos and afterward (Public Board)

Nobody here knows where I live so:

Full pantry of shelf stable foods. Everything from flour to canned chili to booze, spices, sauces, grains, etc.

All 3 cars gassed up full.

20+ gallon gas in reserve in cans

1800W power supply + small 500W power supply

3600W Generator

Even a 1000W power inverter (box that turns 12VDC from a car into two AC plugs).
(In other words, several redundant independent ways to power fridges and devices if need be)

A couple 100W solar panels to charge/ top off the power supplies

~2000 USD cash in 10s and 20s squirreled away in the house

Many cans of butane fuel for 2 butane camp stoves

3 full propane tanks

Gravity water filtration - just like the "Berkey" water filter cult, but home made from plastic buckets and micron level ceramic filters. Plus extra filters.

A Baofeng UV5R handheld HF radio that picks up police and emergency channels as well as NOAA weather radio, that I never have a clue how to configure and use. Also keying it up requires a ham license so I only have it as a transmitter for a real emergency. (I recommend these things even if you have no clue about radio operation, you can learn. Amazon sells them for $20 apiece in two packs.)

+Two pair walkies.

Let's hope I look like a dumbass after November 5th.

First of all, there was no general anger level in society like there is now, in 2000.

Secondly, the Y2K crisis was way overblown: thousands of IT contractors were brought into corporate murrica and in other countries to rewrite code so that the rollover was not an event. I had a hunch that the rollover from 99 to 00 was a big nothing and this proved true. I'm certain that any real time systems that needed to operate continuously (electric plants, sewer and water, etc) had been remediated and tested years before.

Thirdly the US is in multiple overlapping crises - financial/debt at all levels, cost of living, and political hatred, all at once. We had nothing like that back then.

I have an icky feeling that the sequence of events after the election may be political violence followed very closely (matters of days) by lockdowns, restrictions, and breakdowns of normal operating practices. Like COVID but accompanied by public pushback and violence.

I'm trying to prepare us for a short term crisis of inconvenience that does not turn into door to door pogroms. For example, if the power gets cut I can keep our freezers running. If the water supply gets shut down I can filter enough safe water to keep us going. etc.

If it rises above that level we're not that prepared (EG, no guns owned here.) My plan is a 1-2 month plan, not a 6 mo-5 yr plan.

We'll see if I am stupid on Nov. 5 or 6 and how much fuckery the American public will tolerate.

Yeah Y2K ended up being a big nothing burger. Media hype made it seem like a much bigger deal than it really was.

I hope you're wrong but we'll see what happens. It's not stupid to prep as a natural disaster could have a similar effect.

The Y2k rollover was a real problem. Most companies issued fixes for their software and hardware, but some older software was unable to be fixed. At my job, they were told there was no fix for the accounts payable system. The company didn't want to get a new system, but was forced to because after Y2k rolled around, the system reverted back to 1900. I told them that would happen and it did. It was a mess until we got a new system in place.

This election is a lot different than Y2k. The Democrats will go wild if Trump wins because they're mentally filled with hatred for him to begin with. I don't know what to expect from them. I hope it won't be that bad. I'm just praying that we win and can take the country back from these lunatics.

Actual Y2K Bug

by FSK, Tuesday, November 05, 2024, 23:37 (263 days ago) @ JoFrance

There was an actual Y2K bug on the project I was working on at the time. It was an SQL script that was written in September 1999. It was designed to purge all old records from the database, which is itself a dumb idea since that feature was a negligible amount of data. For some reason, instead of doing DATEDIFF, they converted the DATE type to a string with a 2 digit year and then back to a DATE. This caused everything from Jan 2000 and later to look 99 years old, so it got deleted.

A lot of people don't realize the work it took to fix these programs before Y2k. In the end, it looked like there was never a problem but that was only because most companies fixed most of the problems beforehand. I had to apply fixes to most software and hardware we had in the company I worked at and it was all good, except for the AP system.

The average corporation's software is shit that crashes 5 times a day for random reasons. If there's an extra bug thrown in for Y2K, that's just pissing in the wind.

I don't know what will happen if Trump wins. Liberals are unstable people and won't give up their power without a fight. I'm not prepared that much and I'm just hoping that things don't go that far.

It looks like the word is out Trump is going to be allowed to win.

At a meetup, I saw a hardcore Liberal guy saying "I come from a middle-class family." whenever anyone asked him a question.

The Democrats with ambition to be President would rather have Kamala lose. If Kamala wins, she's the incumbent winning unopposed in 2028 in the Democrat primary. If Kamala loses, now 2028 is an open primary for the Democrats, running against a non-incumbent Republican.

The journalists (like Anderson Cooper) are getting annoyed that, even when they tee up easy softball questions for Kamala, she still fumbles her answer. They've accepted that her incompetence exceeds their ability to prop her up.

If Antifa does riot, they aren't going to be able to destroy the supply chain. The people running the supply chain are for the most part Republicans or moderate Democrats. Antifa only has credibility to riot when police are given stand-down orders, which will not happen this time.

Democrats are going to fall back to Plan B. They're going to block Trump at every step for the next 4 years, via Congress, the courts, the Deep State, etc. Then they'll resume in 2029 when they hope to win President again.

There also are rumors of a civil war in the Democrat party, between the commie faction who are actively trying to topple the country, and the people who just want to run a stable civilized country. Hopefully, the Democrats can purge the commies or at least limit their influence. If we're lucky the 2029 Democrat candidate for President won't be "the country is fucked if they win".

I think they don't know how to stop him this time. They've tried everything and their old cheating methods aren't working anymore. One false election move and the Dems are immediately called out and sued. Many will be prosecuted if they cheat. The Republicans now have zero tolerance for cheaters, no matter who they are thanks to new leadership at the RNC.

The Democrats know they have a loser candidate in Kamala. They kept Joe Biden for too long and then he blew it for them with his absolutely damning debate performance. They were busted and had to stick with Kamala after Biden endorsed her. Kamala is Biden's payback to the Democrat party and especially Nancy Pelosi who strong-armed him to step down. The fact that they chose him as the candidate in the first place doomed them from the start. They knew it was iffy but he was probably the only candidate that would allow Obama et al. to run the government from the shadows.

The journalists know that Kamala is a total joke, but their reputations are on the line. Kamala won't answer any questions and their audience is expecting answers. All they ever get is rope-a-dope from her.

I've always thought Democrats would fall back on Plan B and try to sabotage his presidency but none of their lawfare is working against him. Plus, they have to win elections in Congress. Its looking likely Republicans will take the Senate. I don't know about the House, but I hope so.

The Democrat party is dead. They had their chance to reclaim their roots with RFK, Jr. but instead rejected him. Inadvertently, they helped create the unity ticket that's made up of total garbage and deplorables.

Jimmy Dore reckons the Democrats will use the 14th Amendment to not certify Trump as president should he win, by claiming he has previously engaged in an insurrection.

Democrats will try, but Trump was never indicted for insurrection in any of his many lawfare cases. They'll just make fools of themselves.
