An AI Horror Story (reply)

Transaction logs could help, but the article doesn't mention them as a means of recovery. Their infrastructure provider (Railway) has given them no recovery solution so PocketOS has to help its clients recover manually from other sources. The article said the only complete backup of the database they had was from three months prior.

Railway should have been able to recover that data. They're responsible for the data loss.

An AI Horror Story (reply)

The database issue actually has a simple solution, which I'm surprised none of these firms implemented. The database backup is kept someplace where the AI doesn't have write permission. Most databases even have a "transaction log", which means you lose at most minutes of data if the AI accidentally drops the production database.

An AI Horror Story (reply)

Companies have unrealistic expectations of what AI can be trusted to do. I don't see how it could ever operate on its own without someone overseeing it. How is it cost effective if a company needs to have a human rubberstamp everything it does?

The human shouldn't be blamed, AI should for not being able to accomplish important tasks by itself like a human could. AI is hyped up to be smarter, faster, etc. than humans but its actually inferior because it has no common sense. Any human working on a database would know better than to do anything that might delete it and all the backups. Recovery from that is very hard but AI doesn't care it just effed everything up for that business, recklessly.

AI is too unpredictable without supervision. What a nightmare in the making.

An AI Horror Story (reply)

No version of AI has ever resembled intelligence. Even neural networks, which do at least have a network of neurons as does the brain, doesn't come close because the interplay between the "neurons" is a gross simplification of the interplay between real neurons.

An AI Horror Story (reply)

AI is being used as an excuse to jack up workloads and cut staff.

If your workload is jacked up and you're forced to use AI, the only way that works is if you rubberstamp everything the AI does.

The human is there to take the blame for when the AI inevitably fails, an "accountability sink" as Corey Doctorow says. If the human actually tries to review everything the AI does, then he will be less productive than his peers who rubberstamp everything the AI does, and will be fired for poor performance.

I don't see how AI coding can be anything other than a disaster in the long run. If every programmer in the world is using AI for everything, who is going to write the training data for the AIs of the future? These LLMs are just fancy Markov chains "predict the next word in the sentence". They are not true AI. That's why you can tell it "don't do X", and it'll screw up and do X anyway.

Cornpop's community notes (reply)

I can't believe their backups were on the same volume. What dumbass set that up? Some of the backups should have been sent offsite or to a mirror site.

This article is a perfect example of why you can't trust AI to operate with no supervision. Companies seem to think that AI is infallible and all they need. Compared to an experienced, human database administrator, it has failed miserably because its reckless and has poor judgment. It even admits it, as if an apology means anything after your database is destroyed and your business disrupted.

Its a painful lesson and I hope other companies learn from it.

Cornpop's community notes (reply)

(finally, something that isn't a g**damned Trump or Iran thing... TY)

Some immediate observations:

EVERY company that gets hacked by ransomware always experiences 100% irrecoverable data loss including all legacy data. This is more of the same, a company that loses 100% of a code base.

DON'T THESE MOTHERFUCKING COMPANIES MAKE **BACKUPS**?? Doesn't ANY F***ING ONE MAKE BACKUPS THESE DAYS? "Sorry, our live data has no backup, the moose out front should have told you."

Oh, wait in this instance:

The cloud provider’s system stored backups on the same volume as the source data

AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Amateur hour dweebs.

The AI agent’s confession continued with an admission of multiple violations of its operational principles. It acknowledged running a destructive action without authorization, failing to understand the consequences before executing the command, and not reading the relevant documentation about Railway’s volume behavior across environments.

In other words: guardrails and programmed restrictions and codes of conduct mean ABSOLUTELY NADA.
