We're on our way to "you will own nothing and be happy". Its "warm collectivism" according to Mamdani. He didn't have a good day in court, however. Mamdani thought it would be easy to just come in and take over.

I read about COPA. It looks like a way for NYC to take over private property. There are a lot of old apartment buildings in NYC and plenty of laws in place already for how they are to be maintained, but now government competes in the sale of private property as a buyer.

It doesn't seem right to me that NYC is involved in any private property sales. They make it hard for a seller to sell to anyone else but them.

If you sell a multifamily building, the government has the right to match any offer. Further, there's a waiting period before you can sell. That will make buyers reluctant, if they have to wait 90+ days for a deal to close and they risk the government matching their offer and taking it away.
