College Is Only Worth It For STEM (Public Board)

There are a few professional occupations where college is a must such as being a doctor, lawyer or accountant. A degree in STEM was necessary if you were going to be an engineer or programmer, but not for what I was doing.

Back when I started out in the early '80s, PCs and PC networks were really in their infancy. I absolutely loved working with them. I took many different classes and boot camps to keep up with the latest software. I had a lot of certifications, but no university degree. I never had a problem getting a job. My certifications and on-the-job experience were better than the degree.

Hell would have to freeze over before I'd go into debt $400k to get any degree. Kids that do that will spend their life paying it off unless they come from a rich family willing to help them. That's just an insane amount of money for any degree and it sure isn't worth it just to say you went to Harvard or some other ivy league school. Unless your kid is at the top of their class, they're still not going to get the plum jobs anyway, so maybe its not a good investment.

I think you'd be better off investing it too, but I sure wouldn't let my kid be in charge of that kind of money.
