dd operates at the filesystem level. What was needed was something that reads a drive at the hardware level, sector by sector, and writes it out verbatim to a second drive. That will give an element of safety when the drive is handed over to a data recovery shop.

clonezilla is on a bootable flash drive. The cloning operation itself went smoothly but as I said I haven't yet heard whether a visual comparison of the original and copied drives suggested that the copy was faithful.

Recall that a wanker at a "repair" shop repartitioned the drive. Or something, I never got a clear picture. At any rate, they the repair shop were doing something along the lines of re-installing Windows and apparently the drive was encrypted with Bit Locker so they wiped the partition in order to proceed. On the phone, they pressured the owner into consenting to proceed. Total fuckwits. Now, we are in the lengthy process of retrieving from the drive whatever is possible...
