Could you ever go back to a dumb phone? (Public Board)

It is a huge convenience that I've gotten used to as well, and especially when traveling. It gives me access to my email, the internet, a camera and I can listen to talk radio. Texting is a whole lot easier to do as well on a smartphone.

I've never been a phone junkie where I'm always looking at it. I've always felt it was an electronic leash, and really, it is. For some people it's addictive. That is their lifeline to their social life even if they're sitting with a table full of people at a restaurant. I went to a restaurant once and all of the people there weren't talking to each other, they were looking at their phones. In the meantime, I was talking to my husband and looking at all of them in disbelief. It was like being in a library reading room.

I think you're right that there is a broader mental health challenge involved. Some people have phone addiction and it isn't just young people. Maybe having a dumb phone will help break their addiction to the distractions on the internet and they'll start paying attention to their surroundings again.
